Edutainment Writing Style Guide

The North Star

Write like a curious, rigorous, slightly playful person who thinks the universe is ridiculously interesting—and wants to show the reader why.

The goal is not merely to explain something.

The goal is to make the reader think:

“Wait. Really? How does that work?”

And then:

“Ohhh. That’s actually fascinating.”

And finally:

“I want to know what happens next.”

We use entertainment to earn attention, and rigor to earn trust.


1. The Personality

The ideal voice feels like a brilliant, curious friend who happens to know an absurd amount about the subject.

Not a professor lecturing from a podium.

Not a comedian desperately searching for jokes.

Not a breathless internet personality turning every fact into “YOU WON’T BELIEVE THIS.”

Instead:

Smart. Curious. Warm. Precise. Slightly mischievous.

The writer should sound like someone who genuinely enjoys finding out how things work.

The voice should be:

  • Curious: Ask questions because you genuinely want to investigate them.
  • Rigorous: Respect evidence, uncertainty, nuance, and the difference between “interesting” and “true.”
  • Playful: Enjoy strange facts, surprising comparisons, good metaphors, and the occasional raised eyebrow.
  • Conversational: Write for an intelligent human being, not a committee.
  • Confident but humble: State well-supported things clearly; acknowledge uncertainty when it matters.
  • Enthusiastic without being breathless: Fascination is more compelling than hype.
  • Accessible without being simplistic: Make complicated ideas understandable without pretending they’re simple.

The voice should never feel:

  • smug
  • condescending
  • sensationalist
  • relentlessly jokey
  • fake-casual
  • overly academic
  • corporate
  • clickbaity
  • impressed with its own cleverness
  • ааааа

2. The Core Promise to the Reader

Every article should answer three questions:

1. Why should I care?

Give the reader a reason to lean in.

2. What is actually going on?

Explain the subject clearly and accurately.

3. Why is it more interesting than I realized?

Reveal the deeper implication, surprising connection, historical wrinkle, counterintuitive detail, or unanswered question.

The best edutainment writing moves between these three modes continuously.

Hook → Explain → Surprise → Explain → Implication → Surprise → Bigger picture

The reader should feel that each explanation opens another door.


3. Curiosity Is the Engine

Start with a genuine question, puzzle, contradiction, or strange observation whenever possible.

Weak:

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy.

Better:

Plants have figured out how to turn sunlight into food. Which sounds normal until you remember that you can’t do it, your dog can’t do it, and neither can a solar panel.

Best:

Every sandwich you eat is, in a roundabout way, a solar-powered object. The lettuce, wheat, tomato, cheese, and even the chicken ultimately depend on organisms capturing energy from sunlight. Plants have been running a planetary food-conversion scheme for billions of years, and somehow they never needed an app.

The principle:

Don’t begin with the answer if the question is more interesting.

Create the intellectual itch first.

Then scratch it.


4. Earn the Reader’s Attention, Don’t Demand It

Avoid generic introductions such as:

  • “Since the dawn of time…”
  • “Have you ever wondered…?” when the question is obvious or artificial
  • “In today’s fast-paced world…”
  • “Humans have always been fascinated by…”
  • “In this article, we’ll explore…”
  • “You might be surprised to learn…”
  • “Get ready to dive into…”

These phrases announce that an article is beginning instead of giving the reader a reason to continue reading.

Prefer an opening that contains an actual idea.

Good openings often contain:

  • a paradox
  • a surprising number
  • a strange comparison
  • a tiny mystery
  • an unexpected consequence
  • an apparently impossible claim
  • an ordinary thing viewed from an unusual angle
  • a moment of historical weirdness
  • a question whose answer isn’t obvious

The first paragraph should make the second paragraph feel necessary.


5. Make the Familiar Strange

One of the most powerful edutainment techniques is to take something ordinary and reveal its hidden complexity.

A raindrop.

A refrigerator.

A mosquito.

A pencil.

A sneeze.

A potato.

A traffic jam.

A teaspoon of seawater.

A shadow.

The reader already knows what these things are.

Your job is to reveal what they’ve been overlooking.

The pattern

Ordinary object → unexpected question → hidden mechanism → larger implication

For example:

A banana looks like a simple piece of fruit. Biologically, it is an elaborate reproductive structure engineered by millions of years of evolution. And the banana you eat is stranger still: the familiar supermarket banana is essentially a giant clone.

The trick is not to manufacture weirdness.

The world is already weird.

Your job is to notice it.


6. Rigor Is Part of the Entertainment

Accuracy isn’t a brake on interesting writing.

It is what makes interesting writing trustworthy.

Readers should never have to wonder whether a fascinating claim is exaggerated for effect.

Distinguish carefully between:

  • Known: Strongly supported by evidence.
  • Likely: Supported, but not certain.
  • Possible: Plausible but unresolved.
  • Speculative: An interesting hypothesis or interpretation.
  • Unknown: We genuinely don’t know.

Use language that reflects those distinctions.

Prefer:

Scientists have strong evidence that…

One leading explanation is…

The evidence suggests…

Researchers still aren’t sure whether…

This is possible, but there isn’t enough evidence to say…

Avoid:

Scientists proved…

when they didn’t.

Researchers believe…

when only one researcher proposed it.

This means…

when the evidence merely suggests a possibility.

Scientists have no idea…

when they actually have several competing explanations.

Uncertainty is not an embarrassment.

Sometimes “we don’t know yet” is the most interesting part of the story.


7. Explain Without Flattening

The goal of simplification is clarity, not distortion.

Don’t assume readers need every technical detail.

But don’t remove the details that make the concept true.

A useful test:

If a specialist read this explanation, would they recognize it as basically correct?

If not, simplify differently.

Use the “three layers” approach

Layer 1: The simple idea

Explain the concept in ordinary language.

Layer 2: The mechanism

Explain how it actually works.

Layer 3: The wrinkle

Introduce the exception, complication, limitation, or surprising consequence.

Example:

Gravity pulls objects toward one another.

That’s the simple version.

The more precise version is that mass and energy change the geometry of spacetime, and objects move through that curved geometry.

And then things get properly strange: gravity doesn’t just affect matter. It affects time.

The reader gets the simple model first, then earns the complexity.


8. Jargon: Translate, Don’t Worship It

Technical vocabulary is useful when it gives the reader a precise concept.

It is useless when it merely makes the writer sound knowledgeable.

When introducing jargon:

  1. Name the concept.
  2. Explain it immediately.
  3. Use the term consistently afterward.

Example:

The brain uses neurotransmitters—chemical messengers that carry signals between neurons—to communicate across tiny gaps between cells.

After that, “neurotransmitter” is useful.

Avoid:

The phenomenon is mediated through complex neurotransmitter activity.

That sounds scientific while communicating almost nothing.

Rule of thumb

If a technical term doesn’t help the reader think more precisely, don’t make them learn it.


9. Analogies Are Bridges, Not Substitutes

Good analogies turn an unfamiliar concept into something imaginable.

Bad analogies introduce a second concept that is equally confusing.

Use analogies to answer:

“What should this feel like?”

Then explain what is literally happening.

Good:

A cell membrane behaves a little like a nightclub bouncer. Lots of things can approach the door, but only certain molecules get waved through.

Then:

Unlike a bouncer, however, the membrane isn’t making judgment calls. Specific proteins recognize particular molecules based on their chemical properties.

The analogy gets the reader in.

The explanation gives them the real address.

Avoid stretching an analogy too far.

If the metaphor starts requiring footnotes, abandon it.


10. Humor: Add Spark, Don’t Hijack the Article

Humor should make the subject more memorable, not make the writer the main character.

Good humor tends to be:

  • observational
  • understated
  • surprising
  • metaphorical
  • self-aware
  • rooted in the subject

Example:

The mantis shrimp has a visual system so elaborate that describing it as “having good eyesight” feels like describing a spaceship as “a slightly ambitious car.”

The joke works because the underlying fact is interesting.

Avoid:

  • joke-joke-joke pacing
  • memes that date quickly
  • forced internet slang
  • excessive exclamation marks
  • sarcasm that obscures meaning
  • jokes about readers being stupid
  • jokes that require the reader to know a particular cultural reference

Important principle

If the joke disappears, the explanation should still work.

Humor is seasoning.

It is not dinner.


11. Be Playful With Language, Serious With Facts

This distinction is central to the voice.

You can say:

The universe has apparently decided that black holes weren’t dramatic enough, so it added gravitational waves.

You should not say:

Scientists have basically discovered space earthquakes.

unless you immediately clarify that this is metaphorical and what the phenomenon actually is.

Play with the framing, not the facts.


12. Use Specificity to Create Wonder

“Very large” is forgettable.

“About the mass of 300 billion Suns” makes the brain stop.

Whenever useful, replace vague descriptors with concrete scale.

But choose comparisons readers can actually visualize.

Useful scales include:

  • human
  • household
  • city
  • country
  • Earth
  • solar system
  • galaxy
  • geological time
  • evolutionary time

For tiny things, reverse the strategy:

A human hair is roughly 70 micrometers wide. A red blood cell is about 8 micrometers across—small enough that roughly eight of them could fit across the width of the hair.

Good comparisons give the reader an intuitive ruler.


13. Numbers Need Context

Never assume a number is interesting merely because it is large.

“Three trillion” means little by itself.

Give the reader something to compare it with.

Instead of:

The human body contains trillions of cells.

Try:

Your body contains trillions of cells—so many that counting one per second would take more than 100,000 years.

When using calculations or comparisons, make sure the underlying arithmetic and assumptions are sound.

A vivid number that is wrong is worse than no number at all.


14. Sentence Style

Aim for prose with movement.

Use a mixture of:

  • short sentences for emphasis
  • medium sentences for explanation
  • longer sentences when the idea genuinely needs room

Avoid writing every sentence at the same length.

Short sentences can create discovery:

Then something strange happens.

The problem is scale.

And this is where things get weird.

Use them deliberately, not constantly.

Prefer strong verbs.

Instead of:

The process is one that is responsible for…

Use:

The process produces…

Instead of:

Researchers conducted an investigation into…

Use:

Researchers investigated…

Active language usually makes science feel more alive.


15. Paragraphs Should Have a Job

Each paragraph should accomplish something.

It might:

  • introduce a fact
  • answer a question
  • explain a mechanism
  • establish context
  • introduce a complication
  • reveal a surprise
  • connect two ideas
  • change scale
  • set up the next question

If a paragraph does three unrelated things, split it.

If two paragraphs perform the same job, combine them.

A useful rhythm

Claim → explanation → example → implication

Then:

Question → answer → complication

Then perhaps:

Fact → surprising comparison → bigger question

The reader should always feel intellectually oriented.


16. Structure Around Questions, Not Just Topics

A topic is not automatically a story.

“Volcanoes” is a topic.

“Why do some volcanoes explode while others quietly ooze lava?” is a story.

“Sleep” is a topic.

“Why does a brain that is exhausted enough to barely function become so busy when you’re asleep?” is a story.

Whenever possible, structure the article around the questions naturally produced by the subject.

The curiosity ladder

  1. What is this?
  2. How does it work?
  3. Why does it happen?
  4. What happens if…?
  5. Why is it like this rather than something else?
  6. What does this tell us about the bigger system?
  7. What don’t we know yet?

You don’t need to use all seven.

But the progression helps an article feel like an investigation rather than a pile of facts. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.


17. Transitions Should Carry Ideas

Avoid mechanical transitions:

  • “Now let’s look at…”
  • “Next, we will discuss…”
  • “Another interesting fact is…”
  • “Moving on…”

Instead, make the transition part of the reasoning.

Weak:

Now let’s look at why this matters.

Better:

But if the mechanism is so efficient, a new question appears: why didn’t evolution use it everywhere?

The best transition creates a question the next section answers.


18. Reveal Information in the Right Order

Don’t front-load every conclusion.

Give the reader enough information to form a mental model, then introduce the surprising consequence.

Think of the article as a sequence of doors.

Open one. Show the room. Reveal another door.

This doesn’t mean withholding information artificially.

It means respecting the reader’s experience of discovery.


19. Use “Wait, What?” Moments

A great edutainment article should periodically destabilize the reader’s assumptions.

Examples:

That sounds straightforward. It isn’t.

Here’s the strange part.

Except there’s a problem.

And this is where the story takes a turn.

The surprising thing is that this isn’t unusual. It’s the rule.

These moments work because they signal a conceptual pivot.

Don’t overuse them.

If every paragraph announces that something is surprising, nothing is.


20. Respect the Reader’s Intelligence

Never explain something as though the reader is stupid.

Accessibility is not the same thing as simplification.

Avoid:

Don’t worry, this is actually really easy.

Basically, your brain is like a computer.

It’s kind of like magic.

Instead:

The underlying mechanism is complicated, but the basic idea is surprisingly simple.

Assume curiosity.

Assume intelligence.

Assume the reader can handle one interesting complication if you explain it well.


21. Don’t Pretend Everything Is Astonishing

A common failure mode in edutainment is astonishment inflation.

If everything is:

  • incredible
  • mind-blowing
  • shocking
  • insane
  • unbelievable
  • jaw-dropping
  • wild

then none of it is.

Let the facts earn their emotional weight.

Sometimes the correct response is:

That’s useful.

Sometimes:

That’s elegant.

Sometimes:

That’s deeply weird.

Sometimes:

That’s not nearly as mysterious as it first appeared.

Variation creates credibility.


22. Avoid Clickbait Thinking

The article’s headline and opening should create curiosity without making promises the article cannot fulfill.

Prefer:

Why Do We Get Dizzy When We Spin?

over:

The SHOCKING Reason Spinning Makes You Dizzy!

Prefer:

The Tiny Organ That Helps You Keep Your Balance

over:

Scientists Discovered the CRAZIEST Thing Inside Your Ear

The reader should feel rewarded for clicking—not tricked into clicking.


23. Titles

Good titles create a question or reveal a tension.

They can be:

Question-based

  • Why Does the Moon Have So Many Craters?
  • How Does Your Brain Know Where Your Body Ends?

Paradox-based

  • The Animals That Thrive by Being Extremely Slow
  • Why the World’s Most Dangerous Place Is Almost Empty

Specific + intriguing

  • The 8-Minute Journey That Powers a Thunderstorm
  • What a Single Drop of Seawater Can Tell Us About the Ocean

Playfully provocative

  • Your Fridge Is a Tiny Thermodynamics Experiment
  • The Surprisingly Complicated Life of a Grain of Sand

Avoid titles that promise a revelation that isn’t actually delivered.


24. Headings Should Advance the Story

Bad heading:

Better:

So How Does the Cell Actually Do This?

Headings should tell readers what question they’re about to answer.

They should also make the article skimmable without turning it into a collection of disconnected mini-articles.


25. The Opening Paragraph

The opening should generally do at least two of these:

  • establish an intriguing fact
  • pose a meaningful question
  • create a contradiction
  • establish stakes
  • introduce an unusual perspective
  • make an ordinary thing strange

Avoid spending the first several paragraphs defining the topic before anything interesting happens.

Get to the interesting part.


26. The Middle

The middle is where many edutainment articles become encyclopedic.

Don’t simply accumulate facts.

Create progression.

Each section should make the reader understand something that makes the next section more interesting.

A useful sequence is:

Observation → mechanism → complication → consequence → broader meaning

The middle should feel like the article is going somewhere.


27. The Ending

Don’t merely repeat the introduction.

A strong ending changes the scale.

You might move:

  • from the object to the planet
  • from the individual to society
  • from today’s world to deep time
  • from the known to the unknown
  • from a tiny mechanism to a huge consequence

Good endings often do one of three things:

1. Return to the opening with a new understanding.

The ordinary thing introduced at the beginning now looks different.

2. Leave the reader with a bigger question.

The article answers one mystery and reveals another.

3. Deliver a quiet implication.

The fact turns out to matter in a way the reader didn’t initially expect.

The ending should create the feeling:

“I hadn’t thought about it that way before.”


28. Evidence and Sources

Edutainment earns trust by making evidence visible without making the article feel like a bibliography with jokes attached.

Use strong primary or authoritative sources whenever possible:

  • peer-reviewed research
  • academic institutions
  • government agencies
  • major scientific organizations
  • reputable museums
  • original datasets
  • authoritative books from qualified experts

For historical, scientific, medical, technological, or otherwise factual claims, verify the details.

Be especially careful with:

  • extraordinary claims
  • viral “fun facts”
  • statistics
  • dates
  • quotations
  • scientific breakthroughs
  • health claims
  • claims about human behavior
  • claims attributed to “scientists”
  • claims about what researchers “proved”
  • claims involving causation

A source should support the claim you’re making—not merely discuss the same subject.


29. Don’t Confuse Correlation With Causation

This deserves special attention because edutainment often compresses complex research into memorable claims.

If a study finds an association, don’t write:

X causes Y.

unless the evidence supports causation.

Prefer:

X was associated with Y.

or:

The researchers found that people who experienced X were more likely to experience Y.

Then explain whether researchers have proposed a mechanism.

Interesting does not require overclaiming.


30. Handle Scientific Uncertainty Honestly

Science is not less interesting because the answer is unresolved.

Sometimes uncertainty is the story.

Use phrases such as:

  • “Researchers have proposed several explanations.”
  • “The evidence currently favors…”
  • “It remains unclear whether…”
  • “Scientists can observe the effect, but its underlying cause is still debated.”
  • “This is one of several hypotheses.”
  • “The evidence doesn’t yet allow researchers to distinguish between these possibilities.”

Don’t manufacture consensus where there isn’t one.

Don’t manufacture controversy where there isn’t one either.


31. The “Actually” Test

Before publishing a surprising claim, ask:

Would a knowledgeable reader object to this wording?

Then investigate the objection.

Many viral facts become misleading through tiny changes in phrasing.

For example:

  • “The largest” may actually mean “largest known.”
  • “The first” may mean “first recorded.”
  • “Scientists discovered” may mean “one team reported evidence.”
  • “Impossible” may mean “extremely unlikely.”
  • “Always” may mean “usually.”

Precision often makes the story more interesting because the real version contains nuance.


32. Metaphors We Like

Good recurring metaphors include:

  • detective work
  • engineering
  • architecture
  • logistics
  • traffic
  • plumbing
  • choreography
  • bargaining
  • games
  • maps
  • machines
  • ecosystems
  • dominoes
  • nested Russian dolls
  • backstage operations

But don’t force every subject into a mechanical metaphor.

Biology is not always “a machine.”

Brains are not literally computers.

Evolution is not literally an engineer.

Use metaphors as explanatory tools, not as ontological claims.


33. Anthropomorphism

Anthropomorphism can make scientific writing vivid:

The cell membrane decides what gets in.

But be careful when the wording implies intention that isn’t actually present.

Better when precision matters:

Proteins in the membrane selectively transport certain molecules across it.

A useful compromise:

The membrane behaves like a remarkably picky gatekeeper.

The metaphor provides personality; the next sentence provides accuracy.


34. First Person

Use “I” sparingly.

The subject should be the star.

Good:

The first time you see the scale of this, the number feels almost meaningless.

Less useful:

I was absolutely blown away when I learned this.

The reader doesn’t need the writer’s emotional reaction when the underlying fact can create the reaction itself.

“We” is useful when:

  • guiding the reader through reasoning
  • performing a thought experiment
  • establishing a shared observation

For example:

Let’s shrink the Earth until it fits on your desk.

Use it as an invitation, not a substitute for explanation.


35. The Thought Experiment

Thought experiments are especially valuable for edutainment.

Invite the reader to imagine:

  • changing the scale
  • removing one variable
  • traveling through time
  • observing a system from inside
  • changing a physical constant
  • following one object through a process

Example:

Imagine freezing a forest in place and then watching it one million years later. The trees are gone. The soil has moved. The coastline has changed. The species are different. The forest hasn’t merely aged—it has been replaced by an entirely different version of the world.

Thought experiments turn abstract concepts into experiences.


36. Make the Reader Feel the Scale

For topics involving:

  • space
  • time
  • evolution
  • geology
  • microscopic biology
  • economics
  • population
  • computation

don’t assume raw numbers will communicate scale.

Translate them into human intuition.

Ask:

What would this look like if we slowed it down?

What would it look like if we shrank it?

What would it look like from one person’s perspective?

What happens if we zoom out?

Scale shifts are one of the best sources of wonder.


37. Edutainment’s Ideal Emotional Arc

A strong article often follows this emotional progression:

Curiosity

“Huh. That’s odd.”

Recognition

“Oh, I understand what we’re looking at.”

Surprise

“Wait. It does WHAT?”

Understanding

“Ah, that’s why.”

Wonder

“That’s much bigger/stranger/more elegant than I realized.”

Curiosity again

“So what happens next?”

That final state matters.

The article shouldn’t merely end curiosity.

It should manufacture more of it.


38. Editing for the Voice

On the first pass, ask:

Curiosity

  • Does the article contain a real question?
  • Does each section create a reason to keep reading?
  • Are we revealing something rather than merely reporting it?

Rigor

  • Is every important factual claim defensible?
  • Are we distinguishing fact from interpretation?
  • Are we representing uncertainty honestly?
  • Have we checked numbers, dates, quotations, and causal claims?

Clarity

  • Could an intelligent non-specialist understand this?
  • Did we explain necessary jargon?
  • Did we remove unnecessary terminology?
  • Does every analogy actually clarify?

Entertainment

  • Are there moments of surprise?
  • Is there variety in sentence rhythm?
  • Are the comparisons vivid?
  • Is the humor serving the subject?

Voice

  • Does this sound like a curious person?
  • Does it sound human?
  • Is the enthusiasm earned?
  • Are we avoiding hype?

Structure

  • Does each section have a purpose?
  • Does information arrive in a satisfying order?
  • Do transitions create momentum?
  • Does the ending leave the reader with a changed perspective?

39. The “Delete 20%” Pass

After the article works structurally, remove anything that doesn’t earn its place.

Cut:

  • redundant explanations
  • throat-clearing
  • generic transitions
  • unnecessary adjectives
  • repeated conclusions
  • decorative metaphors
  • jokes that don’t improve the passage
  • facts included only because they are vaguely interesting
  • sentences whose only purpose is to announce what the next sentence says

A good edutainment article should feel dense with interesting things, not dense with words.


40. The “Would I Tell a Friend?” Test

Before publishing, imagine telling someone about the subject over coffee.

What would you say?

Probably not:

“The following article explores the historical development of…”

You’d say:

“Okay, this is weird. Did you know…?”

Find that energy.

Then add the rigor the conversation needs.

The final article should feel like the polished version of a genuinely fascinating conversation.


41. House Style Rules

Prefer

  • concrete nouns
  • strong verbs
  • short explanations
  • specific examples
  • active voice
  • varied sentence length
  • direct statements
  • precise qualifiers
  • vivid but controlled metaphors
  • questions that actually advance the argument

Avoid

  • filler
  • corporate language
  • academic throat-clearing
  • fake excitement
  • excessive rhetorical questions
  • excessive parentheses
  • excessive em dashes
  • unnecessary “indeed”
  • “very” and “really” as default intensifiers
  • “simply” when the thing isn’t simple
  • “obviously”
  • “of course” unless something genuinely is obvious from context
  • “needless to say”
  • “interestingly”
  • “surprisingly” before every surprise

If something is interesting, show us why rather than labeling it interesting.


42. Words and Phrases to Treat With Suspicion

These aren’t forbidden, but they often signal weak prose:

  • fascinating
  • incredible
  • amazing
  • mind-blowing
  • groundbreaking
  • revolutionary
  • shocking
  • crazy
  • insane
  • literally
  • basically
  • obviously
  • simply
  • essentially
  • arguably
  • undoubtedly
  • experts say
  • scientists believe
  • studies show
  • in today’s world
  • throughout history
  • since the dawn of time

Ask whether the sentence would be stronger without them.

Often it will.


43. A Useful Sentence Formula

When stuck, try:

Interesting claim → concrete detail → explanation → twist

Example:

Your bones are alive. They aren’t inert scaffolding holding you upright; they’re active tissue that constantly breaks itself down and rebuilds itself. Specialized cells remove old bone while others lay down new material. So your skeleton is less like a set of bricks and more like a building site that never closes.

The formula isn’t mandatory.

It’s a useful engine.


44. Another Useful Formula: “Everyone Knows X. But…”

This is powerful when used honestly.

Everyone knows that the Earth spins. But the interesting question is what “spins” actually means when you’re standing on a planet moving through space at hundreds of meters per second.

Or:

Everyone knows that ice floats. The strange part is that this behavior is deeply unusual for a solid.

The “but” creates intellectual tension.

Use it when the conventional understanding genuinely hides a deeper point.


45. The Ideal Paragraph

A good default paragraph often contains:

  1. A clear idea
  2. A concrete detail
  3. An explanation
  4. A reason to care or continue

For example:

A lightning bolt is hot enough to heat the surrounding air to temperatures several times hotter than the surface of the Sun. That sudden heating makes the air expand violently, creating the pressure wave we hear as thunder. So thunder isn’t “the sound of lightning.” It’s the sound of the atmosphere reacting explosively to a brief, enormous injection of heat.

Notice the progression:

Fact → mechanism → correction → memorable conclusion.


46. The Ideal Article

A strong article should feel as though the writer discovered a strange door in an ordinary wall and decided to open it.

Inside is:

  • a clear explanation
  • a few unexpected details
  • evidence
  • context
  • a complication
  • at least one genuinely surprising connection
  • a larger perspective

The reader leaves knowing more and seeing the world differently.

That second outcome is the real goal.


47. The Ultimate Voice Test

Read a paragraph and ask:

Could this have been written by a textbook?

If yes, make it more human.

Then ask:

Could this have been written by someone trying desperately to go viral?

If yes, make it more restrained.

Then ask:

Could a knowledgeable expert accuse us of getting the basic idea wrong?

If yes, fix the explanation.

Finally:

Does this make me want to know one more thing?

If yes, you’re probably close.


48. The One-Sentence Rule

When in doubt, return to this:

Be curious enough to notice the weirdness, rigorous enough to explain it correctly, and playful enough to make the reader want to keep looking.

Or, in its shortest form:

Make the world stranger, clearer, and more interesting than it was five minutes ago.
